Dr Peta Maguire

Clinical Psychologist

Peta is a warm and dedicated clinical psychologist who works primarily with children, adolescents, and families. With over 7 years of experience across government and non-government settings, she has supported young people facing a wide range of emotional, behavioural, and relational challenges.

Peta’s approach is grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), while flexibly drawing on a range of evidence-based frameworks to suit the individual and their needs. Her work is goal-focused, strengths-based, and collaborative—offering a structured, person-centred approach tailored to each young person and their support network.

She has a particular interest in helping young people with anxiety-related conditions, perfectionism, emotional regulation difficulties, low mood, life transitions, and identity development—including gender, sexuality, and adolescent self-concept. Peta is also passionate about supporting family functioning and improving communication and attachment between family members.

In her sessions, Peta regularly uses screening tools and psychometric assessments to build a detailed understanding of what’s happening across contexts, and to guide focused, meaningful intervention. She enjoys integrating insights from research and theory into her practice and brings curiosity and care to every therapeutic relationship.

Alongside individual therapy, Peta facilitates family-based sessions and group programs designed to support anxiety management, social skill development, and positive coping strategies. She strongly values working closely with parents, carers, and broader care teams—believing that real change often happens within relationships and systems.

“I’ve always been interested in people’s thoughts, emotions, and the dynamics that shape how we relate to others. I find it a privilege to work alongside young people and their families—supporting them to strengthen relationships, better understand themselves, and move toward their goals.

I aim to create a therapeutic space where people feel safe, heard, and supported. I bring warmth, structure, and curiosity to my work and am always guided by what will work best for the person I am working with.

Outside of Held and Heard, I continue to work in the public system and spend time on the farm—where I’m happiest surrounded by animals, especially my dog, horses, cows, and sheep! I’m deeply grateful to be trusted with people’s stories and proud to be part of their journey toward change.”
