Dr Tom Brouard

Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist

Hello!

Tom is a thoughtful and compassionate Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who works with children, adolescents, and their families across a broad range of mental health concerns. He has experience in both government and community-based settings, supporting young people with diverse and often complex presentations.

Tom has worked across general child and adolescent mental health services, Aboriginal health settings, eating disorder programs, and with young people living in out-of-home care. This breadth of experience has shaped a practice that is flexible, culturally informed, and deeply attuned to the developmental and relational needs of young people.

His approach is collaborative and evidence-based, with a strong emphasis on building shared understanding with young people and their parents or caregivers. Tom values taking the time to listen carefully, explain things clearly, and work together to develop practical strategies that support emotional wellbeing, recovery, and resilience. He aims to ensure that care feels respectful, empowering, and manageable for the whole family.

Tom works closely with multidisciplinary teams and external providers, recognising the importance of coordinated care and strong communication across systems. He is particularly mindful of the impact of a young person’s environment and relationships on their mental health, and seeks to support change in ways that are sustainable and developmentally appropriate.

“I’m deeply interested in understanding each young person in the context of their family, culture, and lived experience. I see it as a privilege to work alongside children, adolescents, and their caregivers as they make sense of what’s been happening and find a way forward together.

I aim to create a space where young people feel safe, respected, and understood, and where families feel supported rather than judged. I bring care, curiosity, and clarity to my work, and I’m always guided by what will be most helpful for the young person and those around them.

Outside of Held & Heard, Tom enjoys spending time on the hobby farm he shares with his partner, Dr Peta Maguire, caring for their cattle, sheep, and horses. He values the grounding nature of farm life and the sense of balance it brings, and believes that connection — to people, animals, and place — plays an important role in wellbeing.
